We all want the best for our dogs, whether that’s the latest smart collar or a DIY setup. Financial struggles don’t mean we love our pets any less; it just means we have to be a bit more resourceful. If a monthly subscription isn’t in your cards right now, don’t sweat it—you don’t have to choose between your budget and your peace of mind. I’ve found a way to get the monitoring you need with a simple one-time purchase and no recurring fees. Let’s talk about how to do ‘smart’ monitoring on a budget.

My go-to for budget-friendly monitoring is Zmodo. I bought my first Zmodo in 2007. I’ve used them for almost two decades, and they’ve never let me down. The best part is that you get clear, 1080p HDMI live images with zero subscription required. If your budget eventually allows for it, they offer an optional year-long subscription for $50 per camera, which is great for extra features. But if you’re keeping things lean, the standard free setup gives you everything you need to keep an eye on your pack.
The difference between a non-subscription and a subscription is a continual feed to the cloud. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week it will record and store that recording on the cloud for you to review. I did the subscription one year, but I just didn’t find I needed all that footage, so I didn’t renew it.
It’s really easy to set it up.
- Purchase the Zmodo camera. One, two, or more cameras. You can expect to pay well under a hundred dollars for four cameras. The app can show up to 4 cameras on one screen.
- When it arrives, mount them where it would be most convenient for you.
- Download the app. It’s a small app.
- Set up each camera according to the directions. This usually involves holding your phone up to each camera so it can register the camera on your phone.
And you’re done! You can open the app and start watching!
What you get with the Zmodo camera is:
- When there is a sound, or movement, the camera will record for about 30 seconds and store the recording.
- You can access the stored recordings on the app under Events.
- You can choose to record in HD or LD to save some of your internet data.
- You can choose a camera with night vision.
- There is a “Live” option on the app where you can watch what the cameras are looking at in real time! The picture is clear enough to see if your dog is breathing easy.
- You can hear what is going on and see what is going on AND the cameras have speakers in them so you can say something and it will go through the camera.
- To download an event to your phone you need a subscription, but you can take a screenshot with your phone and save the event that way.
- There are all kinds of options: Viewing area, speaker, talk, night vision, and there’s also an option to flip the camera view upside down just in case you couldn’t mount the camera right side up, or if it fell down and is upside down.
I love this camera for its simplicity. For senior dog owners, checking in is a breeze: open the app, hit ‘Live View,’ and there’s your best friend. It’s also an excellent tool for managing barking. The camera alerts you to the noise, and you can immediately use the ‘Talk’ feature to soothe your dogs and remind them they aren’t alone. It’s high-tech care without the high-tech price tag.
At the end of the day, being a great dog owner isn’t defined by how much you can spend on the latest gadgets. I know what it’s like to count every penny, and I want you to know that your love for your pack is just as deep whether you’re using a high-end smart collar or a budget-friendly camera. It’s the attention you pay—monitoring them, soothing them when they’re anxious, and just being there—that truly matters. If you’re in a season where things are tight, take a deep breath. You’ve got this, and more importantly, your dogs have you.
