Disclosure: Why I use these links I’m a professional groomer and a “pack leader” to 5 senior dogs. I only recommend products I have researched or used with my own pack. I may earn a small commission if you purchase through a link. This way we can keep this information free for all! Thank you for your support!
I looked into Whistle brand, they are sunsetting their devices! I recommend Fi , Tractive or PetPace instead for long-term health monitoring.
How I Monitor Sleeping Breath Count at Home
Identifying “health issues” before they become “health problems” is the goal. One solid way I do this is by counting resting breaths. If you have just one dog , it takes about 30 seconds. But for me? It’s 5 dogs x 30 seconds = 2.5 minutes – and that’s if they all stayed relaxed! Add a guest dog and a wiggly senior and it starts to add up!
That’s why I’ve shifted to using smart trackers like the Tractive DOG 6 and PetPace. Instead of me waiting until they fall asleep to get one single data point, these trackers monitor their breaths all day long. It builds a baseline and alerts me if things change, so I can go back to being ‘Your Groomer’ and ‘Their Human’ instead of just a human stopwatch.(Not all trackers do this equally, See the comparison table below).
Why a GPS Dog Tracker is a Game Changer
As a groomer, I see everything on the outside of the dog, but tech lets us see the inside! I have 5 senior dogs. I keep track of their sleeping breath count. It’s an indicator of heart and lung health. If it’s under 30/min, I know they’re doing fine. Now I’ve found these health trackers for dogs! This changes the whole game! I can check in on my puppers any time I want and see how they are doing!
My Top 3 Picks
1. Fi Series 3 (The “Ironman” of Collars)
The Groomer’s Take: In my grooming trailer, I see all kinds of hardware, and the Fi Series 3 is the most ‘groomer-proof’ collar I’ve encountered. It’s built with a stainless steel frame that doesn’t just look good—it survives the ‘zoomies’! I love this for my clients with high-energy ‘escape artists’ because the battery lasts for weeks, not days. If you’re like me and manage a multi-dog household (5 + a guest dog!), you don’t want to be charging six collars every night. The Fi Series 3 has GPS and steps, but it doesn’t currently count Resting Respiratory Rate (RRR) the way the others do.
2. Tractive DOG 6 (The “Health First” Monitor)
The Groomer’s Take: I recommend the Tractive specifically for my senior clients or dogs with known health quirks. It’s one of the few that provides high-frequency vital sign monitoring. It tracks heart and respiration. For my own seniors, it’s my ‘early warning system.’ Plus, it clips onto almost any collar, which is great for dogs who are picky about their accessories.
3. PetPace (The “Clinical Grade” Choice)
The Groomer’s Take: When a client tells me their dog is ‘just acting off,’ I point them to PetPace. This is less about finding a lost dog in the woods and more about knowing exactly how they feel. It uses AI to detect pain and stress levels—things we groomers try to read through body language every day. It’s the closest thing to having a vet in your pocket. For a dog recovering from surgery or a senior needing close observation, this is my top choice for monitoring ‘internal’ health.
